Where do people build their settlements? On top of hills or next to riverbanks. They build walls or ditches to keep people out.
MINING TOWNS Where minerals were discovered, like Kimberly where they found diamonds or Johannesburg where they found gold. They are called MINING TOWNS
INDUSTRIES Some towns are developed close to industries like Sasolburg - coal were found and Saldanha for steel and fishing industries
HARBOUR TOWNS/PORTS Some cities and Towns are develop around HARBOURS. Ships can anchor safely and can load or unload their cargo
TOURIST ATTRACTIONS Where people can visit on holiday, including beaches, game reserves and casinos
INFORMAL SETTLEMENTS No streets, no sewerage systems, no running water. They live in shelter made from waste materials
WATER We need 2L of water a day to survive. In some areas water are scarce and people must walk many km to collect water
ENERGY We need fuel to keep warm, cook food and heat water. Coal is used to make electricity. Other source of energy is WOOD, WIND, SUN
SHELTER Safe and secure housing is important. Some people live in house others in informal settlements
HEALTH CARE Everyone has a right to emergency health care. Not everyone can afford to see a doctor. There is a shortage of clinics in rural areas and people have to wait.
FARMING Growing crops and looking after animals
What do farm workers do? plant seeds, manage fields, pick and pack fruit, look after animals, milk cows.
What jobs is in the city? Making things selling things work that helps other people
SERVICES Jobs like, doctors, nurses, teachers, dentists, car mechanics and hair dressers
What are farm roads used for? Mainly to move crops, workers and machinery between farm buildings and fields
WHAT ARE THE TOWN/CITY ROADS USED FOR? Transport people to work and other places Transport goods
WHAT IS A FREEWAY? Freeways are in cities. Many cars can travel at a time
FOOTPATHS It is a narrow path that people use to walk in areas where there are no roads.
PAVEMENT Towns and cities have roads with footpaths on each side called a pavement
LANDMARK Features that you notice, a beautiful building, a fountain, a tall tree.
WHAT IS A NATURAL LANDMARK? Hills, rocks, rivers, waterfalls,
