Psychology - Research Methods

Lilly Clare Psychology A Levels English 12 cards

Cards in this deck (12)

  1. 1What are the four types of experiments?Laboratory, Field, Natural, Quasi
  2. 2Explain key functions of laboratory experiments. (3)The researcher has full control over the IV and EV.
    Done in a controlled environment.
Participants are randomly allocated to the groups.
    Delibrate manipulation of the IV.
    Can easily be repeated.
  3. 3What are the strengths of laboratory experiments? (2)Control - over EV , if all other variables other than IV are controlled successfully or eliminated. cause and effect will be established
Replication- can easily be carried out again, if the findings are the same then confidence in the experiment goes up
  4. 4What are the weaknesses of laboratory experiments? (2)Loss of ecological validity- high level control over the environment, an experiment can become artificial, results may not generalize to the outside world.
Demand Characteristics- when participants try to make sense of research situations and act accordingly. natural behavior is affected.
  5. 5Explain the key functions of a field experiment.Naturally occurring surroundings.
The researcher still has control over the IV.
  6. 6What are the strengths of a field experiment?Improved ecological validity.
    Reduction of demand characteristics.
  7. 7What are the weaknesses of a field experiment? (2)Loss of control of EV (extraneous variables)
    Ethical issues- no informed consent.
  8. 8What are the key functions of a natural experiment? (3)Natural.
    Different from a field experiment.
Experimenter has no control over the IV.
Have to use a naturally occuring IV.
  9. 9What are the weaknesses of a natural experiment? (2)No control.
    Less evaluation.
  10. 10What are the strengths of a natural experiment?Only ethical way.
  11. 11What are the key functions of a quasi experiment? (3)It's an almost experiment
the variables simply exist for example, being old or young.
carried out under controlled conditions (control of EV)
It allows comparisons between different people.
  12. 12What are the strengths of a quasi experiment?Allows comparisons.
