Flashcards
Research Methods - Observations
Cards in this deck (23)
- 1Structured ObservationsThe researcher has a behaviour checklist to tally behaviour that is being observed
- 2Weakness of Structured ObservationsBehaviour might occur that isn't on the behaviour checklist and then wouldn't get recorded
- 3Strength of Structured ObservationsThere is a clear direction since the observer may be less likely to miss behaviours as they would have them listed
- 4Unstructured ObservationsThe researcher doesn't have a pre-determined behaviour checklist and records any behaviour they can see
- 5Weakness of Unstructured ObservationsObservers may lose sight of the actual observation and would have too many behaviours recorded
- 6Strength of Unstructured ObservationsThis allows the observer to record any behaviours they see and isn't restricted to a checklist
- 7Naturalistic ObservationsAn observation carried out in a natural environment where you would expect to see the behaviour occur
- 8Strength of Naturalistic ObservationsIt is more real to life so it would be high in ecological validity as participants would show more natural behaviours
- 9Weakness of Naturalistic ObservationsThere would be less control by the researcher and it is sometimes difficult to control the participants especially when covert
- 10Controlled ObservationsThis is usually conducted in a controlled setting, the researcher controls who they'll observe and the participants often know that they are being observed
- 11Weakness of Controlled ObservationsIt would be low in ecological validity as it is less real to life as participants may change their behaviour if the observation is controlled
- 12Strength of Controlled ObservationsThe researcher had more control over the observation
- 13Non-participant ObservationThe researcher is not apart of the behaviour that is being observed
- 14Weakness of Non-participant ObservationsThey may miss certain behaviours if it's difficult to observe every behaviour occurring and there is a higher chance of demand characteristics
- 15Strength of Non-participant ObservationsThere is less chance of observer bias if the researcher is not involved in the behaviour being observed
- 16Overt ObservationsParticipants know that they are being observed
- 17Strength of Overt ObservationsIt is ethical as participants have given their consent
- 18Weakness of Overt ObservationsParticipants may change their behaviour if they know that they are being observed and their is a higher chance of demand characteristics
- 19Covert ObservationsWhen participants don't know that they are being observed
- 20Strength of Covert ObservationsParticipants won't change their behaviour as they don't know that they are being observed
- 21Weakness of Covert ObservationsIt is less ethical and it must only be done in a public place
- 22Observer BiasWhere the observer is apart of, or are pretending to be apart of the participants being observed
- 23Weakness of Observer BiasThe observer is less likely measuring what they intended to
