What is History? History is a record or account of past events,people, places and ideas. History focuses on understanding patterns in human behaviour, especially in the context of civilisations, empires, nations and peoples, and can help us use the past to learn about the future.
How do we learn about the ancient past? We learn by preserving the past of our ancestors to what they have left for us. Historians are now today investigating historical mysteries and piece together accurate pieces of what life was when the days went by and archaeologist are digging up fossils.
How do we find, select and interpret historical evidence? you can use 5 simple questions as a starting point to interpret all sorts of historical evidence WHAT, WHERE, WHO, WHERE, HOW. Every image, building artefact, written source and landscapes are a piece of evidence that can help us understand the past. Analysing this kind of evidence is called ''interpreting''
What can we learn from the past? we can use the past to learn about the future and a good understanding of history is useful when planning the future and it can mean that people can avoid repeating the same mistakes. I quote' Hegel was right when he said that we learn from history that man can never learn from history.
WHY STUDY HISTORY ? History is important because an understanding of the past can help people understand why things are the way they are. A good understanding of history is also useful when planning for the future and avoiding the same mistake our past did.
Why do we Preserve the Past ? (UNESCO), historians etc. believe that the study preservation of our past is very important. These people and organisations believe that places and objects of historical interest are part of our legacy and so should be preserved for future generations.
WHAT IS PREHISTORY ? It is defined as the time before the invention of writing. Before written record were kept.
WHAT IS HUMAN CIVILISATIONS ? 'Ancient history' began to produce written records. This time frame from about {3500} corresponds to the rise of civilisation - where highly developed and complex arrangements came about to manage large groups of people living together
WHAT WERE THE FIRST HUMAN CIVILISATIONS ? Sumer, Egypt and India.
What evidence is there of early civilisations ? The earliest evidence is religion, commerce, culture, law, and social development.
What is the difference between "PRE -HISTORY" and "HISTORY" History can be explained as a record of the events that happened in the past. Prehistory does not record the happenings due to the fact that there were no recording facilities available in the period implied by the word ‘prehistory’.
