Question Answer
What are the short term effects of exercise on the respiratory system? • Increased breathing rate • Increased depth of breathing • Oxygen debt
What are the long term effects of exercise on the respiratory system? • Strengthens intercostal muscles • Strengthens diaphragm • Increases the number of alveoli • Increases lung volume
What are the benefits of these long term effects? • Respiratory system gets stronger • More air can be taken in and oxygen can be extracted more effectively to be delivered to working muscles • More effective removal of carbon dioxide
Define 'total lung capacity' The total volume of air in your lungs after your biggest breath in
Define 'tidal volume' The total amount of air breathed in and out in one cycle of normal breathing
Define 'vital capacity' The maximum you can forcibly breathe in and out
What is oxygen debt? The extra amount of oxygen required after anaerobic exercise to return to the amount normally needed when at rest (This doesn't happen during aerobic exercise)
How does smoking effect the respiratory system? Carbon monoxide binds to the red blood cells so less oxygen can be carried around the body meaning less effective oxygen delivery to muscles
