Question Answer
What is most pure iron converted to? Steel
How are steels formed? By adding small amounts of carbon and sometimes other metals into the iron
What are the properties and uses of Low carbon steel? It is easily shaped and is used for car bodies
Give the properties and uses for high carbon steel. Very hard and inflexible. It is used for blades for cutting tools or bridges
Give the properties and uses of stainless steel. It is corrosion-resistant and is used for cutlery and containers for corrosive substances
Why is an alloy harder? When an element such as carbon is added to pure iron, the smaller carbon atom will upset the layers of pure iron atoms, making it more difficult for them to slide over each other
