Give four reasons why the Labour won in 1945? 1) Churchill was complacent 2) Churchill said Labour's socialist policies would never work with a Gestapo 3) The Conservatives didn't recognize how much the people wanted reform 4) Many people remembered the suffering of the 1930's
When was the beverage report and what did it say? December 1942. It said the state should support citizens from cradle to the grave and it should fight the five giants
What were the five giants? 1) Want- people did not have enough basic things, like food 2) Ignorance- lack of a good education 3) Disease- people did not have access to proper healthcare 4) Squalor- people living in poor conditions 4) Idleness- unemployment
Name three acts that were designed to fight "want". 1) 1945 Family Allowance act 2) 1946 National insurance act 3) 1948 National assistance act
What did the 1945 Family allowance act say? Paid mothers 5 shillings a week for every child after the first one
What did the 1946 national insurance act say? Workers and employers paid into the national insurance scheme, which funded unemployment, maternity and sickness benefit, and old age pensions
What did the 1948 national assistance act say? National assistance board set up to help those not covered by national insurance
When was the national health service act set up? What did it mean? 1948. Everyone could use and have any medical facility or supplies. Doctors and Dentists still worked for themselves but had a contract to provide for the NHS
Why was there opposition to the NHS? What did this lead to? Medical professions didn't want to be run by the state. This caused the NHS being set up two years later than originally planned
Why did people eventually have to start paying for most of the NHS? The Government didn't realize how popular or expensive it would be
How did the Government try to fix the problem of the free NHS? Introduced prescription charges (but not for the poor)
