Why was the civil war important to the cattle industry? increased supply and demand. No beef in narth and no money in south.

4 phases of a cowboy's year? 1. Spring round up and brand. 2. The Long drive- to the cow town. 3. In the Cow town - gambling and drinking. 4 The line camp - checking on cattle on the cattle in the winter.
What does open range mean? No fences and no one owns it.
3 reasons for the end of the open range? Over grazing, the drought of 1886 followed by the 43c summer and a winter of -43 and more homesteaders on the plains the led to more land being fenced off.
2 reasons for the decline in the cattle industry. Supply exceeded demand, over grazing and the end of the open range.
How did smaller ranges help the industry recover? Reduced the supply to the west.

2 pull factors that moved people west? Fertile land, cheap land, manifest destiny and gold.
3 problems faced by early settlers? No food, no transport, no hygiene and no one else around and no wood and cold.
How were these problems solved? Farming, the railroad, wells, other people moved west and people planted wood.
How did the railroad attract people west? Made getting their easier and sold the land they got given cheaply.
What does proving up mean? Homesteaders had to live on the land for 5 years and then at the end they didn't have to pay that much for their 150 acres.
3 laws that helped homesteaders? 1. Homestead act. 2. Timber culture act. 3. Reservation policy.
9 key factors affecting Law and order in the west? Distance, poverty, more men, different races, culture of violence, land claims, cattle barons, poor court system and vigilantes.
3 reasons for law and order problems in the west? Claim jumping, different races and vigilantes.
What was the problem of vigilantes? They often didn't give a fair trial, were racist and did things for their own agenda.
3 things that improved law and order in the west? The railroad, more families were in the west and so demand for proper law and order was increased and states.
