Evaluation of Tulving's Long Term Memory

Ella Middlemiss Psychology A level English 7 cards

Cards in this deck (7)

  1. 1Clive WearingSuffers from amnesia & is unable to form new memories. Duration lasts between 7 and 30 seconds. He remembers his wife Deborah. He can remember how to play piano = procedural. He can't remember what food tastes like or his family aside from his wife. He lost semantic and episodic memory from after 1985 - shows different stores of LTM.
  2. 2What year was Butterworth?2002
  3. 3Which case study/ findings?Dr S. a neurologist who fell whilst skiing. He was surprised to see his wife looking older and didn't recall his younger colleagues. He lost the past 25 years of episodic memory. He made a correct diagnosis of his own brain scan (semantic intact) and remembered how to ski (procedural intact).
  4. 4What year was Tulving?1989
  5. 5What did he do?provided evidence with brain scans. Episodic associated with high level of activation in the frontal cortex. Semantic associated with high levels of activity in the back regions of the cortex. Objective.
  6. 6Another strengthTypically amnesiac patients have great difficulty in retaining episodic and semantic information following onset of amnesia. Their memory from before remains intact but they can't form new episodic or semantic memories (declarative info). However procedural memory tend to remain intact.
  7. 7WeaknessWhilst semantic and episodic have clear differences in content, it's unclear if there's a difference in process. They seem to depend heavily on each other and aren't separate - reductionist.
