Memory

  1. RAM

    • Random Access Memory
    • Volitile memory
      • requires power to keep its data
    • Can be read and written too
  2. ROM

    • Read only memory
      • Can only be read and not written to
    • tells CPU how to boot up
      • comes on small, factory made chip built into motherboard
    • Non Volitile memory
      • Permanent memory. It keeps its contents even when it has no power
  3. Storage

    • Primary Storage
      • Refares to memory areas that the cpu can access very quickly
    • Secondary Storage
      • Where all data is stored when not in use
    • Tertiary Storage
      • Used for storing data for long term purposes. Mainly used for achives and back ups
    • Capacity
      • How much data does it hold
    • Speed
      • How quickly can the data be transfared and read
    • Portability
      • Does the data storage device need to be transported
    • Durability
      • How robust is it?
    • Reliability
      • Does it need to be able to be used over and over again without failing?
    • Solid State drive
      • Most of them used a type of flash memory
      • storage devices with no moving parts
      • Significantly faster read/write times than HDD's
    • Optical Disk
      • Standard CD -- 700 MB
