Parts of the Cell

1. nucleus

   • contains DNA
   • transcription happens here
   • has 2 lipid bilayer membranes
     • contain nuclear pores
       • facilitate exchange of material b/w cytoplasm, nucleus

2. mitochondria

   • ATP production via phosphorylative oxidation
   • contains its own genes (cytoplasmic inheritance)
   • replicates independently of nucleus

3. Golgi

   • sorts proteins destination
   • protein modification-ex adding carbs, phosphates, sulfates
   • vesicles released by exocytosis

4. RER

   • studded with ribosomes, make proteins for secretion out
   • contiguous with nuclear envelope

5. SER

   • help transport proteins from RER to Golgi
   • detoxification
   • lipid synthesis (esp for membrane)

6. nucleolus

   • located in nucleus, rRNA made here

7. lysosome

   • contains lysozyme, lyses foreign particles taken up by cell
   • autolysis-apoptosis

8. peroxisome

   • contain catalase, destroy lipids (B-oxidation)
   • help with phospholipid synthesis

9. ribosomes

   • make proteins
