1. Primary Storage

   • RAM
     • Volatile
     • Larger in memory capacity
     • Contents lost when PC turned off
     • Can be written to and read from
   • ROM
     • Non - Volatile
     • Can only be read from
     • Smaller in memory capacity
     • Stores the programs needed to boot up the computer

2. Secondary Storage

   • solid State/ Flash
     • Advantages
       • faster boot up
       • Large storage capacity
       • Can be made very compact
     • Disadvantages
       • Expensive to manufacture
       • Have a limited no. of times can be written to and read from although this number is high
   • Magnetic
     • Advantages
       • Large storage capacity
       • Fast access to read and write data
       • Fairly inexpensive to manufacture
     • Disadvantages
       • Can suffer wear and tear
       • Data can be lost or altered by magnetic field
   • Optical
     • Advantages
       • Disks are fairly durable
       • Disks are very portable
       • Disks are cheap to manufacture
     • Disadvantages
       • The storage capacity of disks is relatively small
       • In some cases, such as blu ray, a special drive is required to read write the data
