Memory: Key words- The multi-store model

1. Short-Term memory: A temporary store that can hold small amounts of information. It is a fragile store & info can be easily lost (decay)

2. Long- Term memory: A permanent store where limitless amounts of information can be stored for long periods of time

3. Capacity: The amount of information that can be held

4. Duration: the length the information can be held for

5. Encoding: How the information is stored, e.g by sound, meaning or image

6. Displacement: A type of forgetting where the items in the STM are pushed out before being transferred to the LTM to make room for incoming items

7. Interference: A type of forgetting when info stored in the LTM is confused with similar info

8. Free recall: a way of testing memory where participants can recall items form a list in any order

9. Serial recall: A way of testing STM where participants are required to recall items forma list in a order of presentation

10. Proactive interference: where things that have already been learned make it harder to learn new things
