- American Indian Policy
- Chief Joseph's feelings
- Chief Joseph feels that the congressmen are making empty promises to
him and his tribe. The President, congressmen, and all the men in
Washington D.C. are telling him that they are friends and that he deserves
justice but no action has been done to support what they are saying.
Chief Joseph also thinks that everybody should be treated the same. The
Indians and white men should have the same laws, have an equal chance
to grow and live, be punished by the law, etc. He thinks that the Indians
should be able to be free like the white men. Free to travel, stop, trade,
work, practice religion, think, act, and talk and he will follow the laws.
When this happens, Chief Joseph believes there will be no more war.
- It is possible that a lot of the Indians had trouble sacrificing their heritage and lifestyle
in order to abide by the new American Indian Policy. And when they did make this
sacrifice, it is possible that the Indian's heritage was almost erased. Based on the
photo of Tom Torlino provided, you can tell the difference of his appearance after he
attended the Indian school for three years. When he was first admitted, you can see
that he is wearing the common Indian clothes and jewelry and his hair is long. After he
attended the school for three years, his hair is short and styled and he is wearing what
looks like a school uniform. This shows evidence of how the school erased their
heritage and changed the Indian's lifestyle to conform to the American ways.

- The President feels that temporary solutions to the Indian's situation have been made for too long and and they
need to come up with a permanent solution. In the past, the policy was that the Indians could peacefully live how
they wanted in the West. However, white people began to settle out West and so the Indians kept having to move.
- President Arthur makes two policy suggestions. First, he recommended that the Indians follow the state and
territory laws of which they live. He also suggested that the Indians could individually receive a piece of land by
patent if they wanted it. He thought that this was a generous action and he proceed to say that the Indians
would say thank you to him by severing their ties with their Indian Heritage and starting agricultural pursuits.
His third suggestion was a liberal appropriation for the support of Indian schools.
