Topic 5- Homeostasis

  1. What is Homeostasis?

    • how we maintain a constant internal environment
    • in response to external or internal changes
  2. Why we need Homeostasis

    • important for enzyme activity
    • important for cell function
    • controls temperature
    • controls blood glucose
    • controls hydration
  3. Negative Feedback Loop

    • Homeostatic control is achieved using negative feedback mechanisms
    • if the level of something rises, control systems reduce it and vice versa
    • the response is the opposite of the stimuli
  4. Control Systems

    • The Nervous System
    • The Endocrine System
    • both systems have receptors, coordination centre and effectors
      • receptors- cells that detect changes to the internal or external environment.
        • these changes are known as stimuli
      • coordination centre- receives and processes information from the receptors
        • sends out signals to the effector
      • effectors- muscles or glands that carry out the response to restore optimum conditions
