1. Related to but distinct from learning

2. The process in which information is encoded, stored and retrieved

3. Gives us the capability to learn and adapt from previous experiences as well as build relationships

4. What we usually think of as memory on a day to day basis is actually long term memory

   • Short term and sensory memory must first be worked through to establish a long term memory

5. A simple model of memory might contain 3 stores

   • Sensory information store (SIS)
   • Short term store (STS)
   • Long term store (LTS)

6. And three processes

   • Encoding (putting into a store)
   • Maintenance (keeping it alive)
   • Retrieval (finding encoded information)

7. Long term memory can contain a lot of information for a long time

8. The short term memory is described as having a 'limited storage capacity'

   • Miller's magic 7 theory , typically remember 7 +/- 2
