Chapter 1: Evolution of Psychology
  1. Birth of Psychology
    1. Mixture between Philosophy and Physiology.
      1. Wilhelm Wundt (1832-1920) is considered the founder of psychology for his revolutionary work. He published the first journal dedicated to psychology, established its first labratory in Leipzig Germany, and helped establish Psychology in 1879.
        1. G. Stanley Hall is credited with bringing Psychology to America, creating the APA and was its first elected president.
        2. Structuralism vs. Functionalism
          1. Structuralism: is the study of analyzing consciousness in its basic elemental structure through self observation. this pratice discontinued due to its subjectbility to personal bias and un-verifiable results.
            1. Introspection
            2. Functionalism: is the study of the function of consciousness and its purpose rather than how It is the main branch of many feilds of Psychology today.
              1. Behaviourism
                1. John B. Watson
                  1. John Watson believed that psychologists should only study what they could observe.
                  2. Behaviourism is the observable study of an organisms response.
                    1. Human nature is believed in Watsons time to be primarily nurture over nature.
                    2. William James, who was influenced by Charles Darwin, thought that Psychology should focus on the functions rather than how its was structured.
                      1. Psychoanalysis
                        1. Sigmund Feurd
                          1. is the attempt to explain personality, treat mental illnesses, and opened the doorway into studying the unconscious.
                            1. "the couch"
                            2. Humanists
                              1. the emphasize of strictily unique qualities of humans, spesifically agency and growth.
                                1. states that tests done by behaviourlists in labs on non-human organisms can not fully be applicable to humans because of out divine qualities.
                          2. The 6 Approaches to Psychology
                            1. Behavioral : How an organism learns depending on rewards or punishments.
                              1. Psychoanalytic: unconscious influences and behaviour.
                                1. Humanistic: Study of how humans are intrinsicly different from other organisms.
                                  1. Cognitive: our ability to learn, the inner-workings of the brain.
                                    1. Biological: The physiological effects on an organism.
                                      1. Evolutionary: the natural selection process of how behaviours are determined.
                                      2. Positive Movment
                                        1. Martin Seligman
                                          1. the study of the innovative, optimistic, fulfilling qualities that are within organisms.
                                            1. the study of positive qualities that can rehabilitate such as love, gratitude, tolerance, courage...
