Rebellion

  1. DIARY

    • 'smooth creamy paper... not been manufactured for at least forty years'
      • Emphasises how precious it is- symbol of rebellion- place for him to express thoughts/ escape. Fascinates him- obselete- forbidden object from the past- book opens to act of rebellion. Diary fascinates him as it is obselete
    • 'The obvious had got to be defended'
      • This cause is bigger than him- contrast to Julia. His diary writing is an ineffectual but nonetheless meaningful private gesture of individual dissent.
    • 'Message... underground organisation.. probably meant death'
      • Not what he hopes- clings to idea of revolution- message does ultimatley lead to death
    • 'To the future or the pats.. when thought is free .. men are different'
      • Directly addressing reader here and outlining all the differences- wants to establish a direct link- as a clear warning of what could happen- Diary is a tool for doing this.
    • 'an identifiable grain of whitish dust'
      • How meticulous people were to cover their tracks- all efforts to waste. Winston understands that in order to combat REALITY CONTROL he must record his private thoughts- introduces his struggle to hold onto his personal beliefs which ultimatley is carried through to the end of the novel.
  2. DOOM

    • 'His only impulse.. to run away' 'Heart stirred painfully' 'foretaste of death' 'chilly shuddering feeling'
      • Senses trying to warn him. Still he conforms to the 'unavoidable order of things'- Perhaps this is why he ignores these feelings- he knows what will eventually happen. No hope for himself- such is society's strength- become natural
    • 'We shall meet in a place where there is no darkness'
      • Winston's interpretation of this- is hopeful one- Miniluv- BB makes him feel 'heavy, calm, protection'- idea he is comforting to Winston -foreshadows submission
    • 'anything old and anything beautiful was vaguely suspect'
      • OBRIEN and JULIA are both suspects
    • 'Throughtcrime is death'
      • He had recognised himself as a dead man- he knows just by committing thoughtcrime he is dead- nothing to lose-life no longer struggle for him but for humanity
    • 'Your worst enemy was your own nervous system'
      • General pronoun- makes reader empathise- foreshadows downfall- use weaknesses against them
    • 'From the moment of declaring war on the party it was better to think of yourself as a corpse'
      • That's how Party want you to think of yourself think anyway- they have ultimate power- better and corpse juxtaposed
    • only common courtesy...keep his knowledge to himself-
      • Still naeieve to think that people are courteous- actually it is a struggle for survival and is evrey msn for himself- to many potential enemies- the appeal to humanity is a stupid one as Orwell shows us- it no longer exists.
  3. END

    • ‘The stoves gone out and the waters cold...It seems to have got colder’
      • Warmth has suddenly gone from the room-building tension- pathetic fallacy- emptiness and coldness- symbolic of their capture- forboding atmosphere
    • ‘The sun must have gone down...was not shining in the yard any longer’
      • Pathetic fallacy- no light- no hope. Idea of sun setting- something ending- their luck has run out- relationship and rebellion over.
    • ‘Stand back to back. Clasp..DO not’
      • Imperatives- commanding- controlling- demanding- -Obey without a thought- don’t run/ try to escape- pointless
    • ‘Now they can see us...Now they can see you’ 'Iron Voice'
      • Parralelling sentences- how everything is meant to be – already planned- childlike- satirical and mocking-Not just cold and expressionless- linking to robotic military nature of party- but strong- everlasting- cannot be destroyed- unconquerable voice. Monotonous-emotionless-monosyllabic
    • ‘It was starting, It was starting at last!
      • Strange that his eaction is elation- happy- no more living in fear of unknown- relief – coming to an end
