There are 3 witches who give Macbeth prophecies about what will happen to him. They tell him he will be Thane (Lord) of Cawdor, and later he will be King. They also tell Banquo (Macbeth's bff) that he won't be King but his sons will be. Banquo doesn't believe what they say, but Macbeth kind of does.
Macbeth does get made Thane of Cawdor, he then thinks everything the witches said will come true!
He then talks to his wife. His wife is very full of herself, she's very confident and powerful. When she finds out about the prophecies she is very excited. She convinces Macbeth to kill the King (Duncan) and force the prophecy to come true. She does this by calling him a coward and suggesting he is not a real man!
Macbeth doesn't really want to kill the king and freaks out and starts seeing things (dagger). His wife is evil and doesn't care about him all she cares about is the power.
Macbeth kills Duncan in his bed!!!
He brings back the dagger and she gets really annoyed with him. She tells him to wash the blood off his hands and plant the daggers on the guards to frame them. He says he can't look at Duncan again, he's really traumatized, so she plants the dagger instead, she takes charge - she wears the trousers in their relationship.
Macbeth then pretends to find out about Duncan's murder, blames the guards and kills them too!
Duncan's son, Malcolm, fears for his own life, and flees to England. Macbeth becomes King.
The next stage of the plan is to kill Banquo and his son as then there will be no heir to the throne. Macbeth hires a gang of murderers to kill them, they kill Banquo but his son (Fleance) gets away!!!
At a banquet Macbeth sees a ghost of his ex-friend Banquo and acts like a crazy man. Lady Macbeth calms the situation and makes excuses for him.
Macbeth returns to the witches for some advice. They also tell him 3 things.
1. Beware Macduff.
2. No man of woman born can harm Macbeth.
3. Macbeth will not be killed until Great Birnam Wood comes to Dunsinane hill
Macbeth feels pretty much invincible when he hears all this.
Meanwhile Lady Macbeth has gone crazy and cannot wash imaginary blood from her hands, her guilt at forcing Duncan's death is driving her insane. She kills herself.
Macbeth gets Macduff's family killed, including his son
Macduff and his men camouflage themselves with trees from Birnam Wood and head for Dunsinane hill.
There is a massive battle, Macbeth boasts that he can't be killed by any man of woman born and we find out that Macduff was born by c section!!!
Macduff cuts off Macbeth's head!
Macbeth is gullible and goes with what he's told, if he had never spoken to the witches in the first place then none of this would have happened!
