Baddeley 1966
Aims: To test whether acoustic encoding is used in short term memory, whereas semantic encoding is used in LTM. To confirm Conrad's findings that STM encodes acoustically.
Procedure:
Acoustically similar words presented (hear, fear, shear)
Semantically similar words presented (big/ large/ huge)
Acoustically dissimilar words presented (Hot, far, jam)
Semantically dissimilar words presented (pen, jump, giggle)
Participant's asked to serial recall either straight away (STM) or after a delay (LTM)
Results:
STM Recall- acoustically similar lists difficulty (substitution errors)
LTM Recall- semantically similar lists difficulty (Substitution errors)
Conclusion: Encoding methods are different for LTM and STM. STM is acoustic, STM is semantic.
Evaluation: Lacks ecological validity, other types of LTM and methods of encoding which aren't considered. No control over participant variable.
