Multi-store Model
proposed by Atkinson and Shiffrin
idea that memory has 3 seperate unitary stores
- sensory register
- recieves lots of information
- via the 5 senses
- each sense has its own sensory register
- most is lost due to little or no attention
- via the 5 senses
- can only hold information for breif periods of time
- if the information is payed attention to, it goes to short term memory
- most research focuses on visual (iconic memory) and auditory (echoic memory)
- iconic memory- stores and processes information for visual stimuli such as shape, size and colour
- echoic memory- stores and processes information about sound
- coding
- iconic- storing material visually
- echoic- storing material acoustically
- duration
- very brief, 1-2 seconds
- capacity
- huge as it includes material from all 5 senses
- recieves lots of information
- short term memory
- long term memory
- sensory register
for information to be retained as a memory, processes of attention and rehearsal are important
environmental stimulus
- sensory register
- attention
- short term memory
- retrival or rehearsal
- remembering
- short term memory
- echoic and iconic
- attention
- sensory register
