Ancient Greece
Greece is a country made up of little islands and slim peninsulas.
A peninsula is a land that is surrounded by water on only three sides.
At Crete, one of the islands, a people called the Minoans lived life as successful traders.
The Minoans were around from 3000 to 1100 bc. They left because people called the Mycenaeans drove them out of Crete.
The Mycenaeans lived in a land called Mycenae.
The Mycenaeans along with the Minoans were one of the early Greek people who wrote. Their form of writing, called Linear B, was the earliest Greek form of writing.
An estimated 300 years after the Mycenaeans declined, the Trojan War was told to have happened.
The Trojan War was told to be the event when Greek soldiers hid inside of a giant wooden horse and sent it as a *present* to the City of Troy. Once it got to Troy the soldiers all came out and ambushed and conquered Troy.
The backstory of the Trojan War supposedly started when the prince of Troy took the Spartan king’s wife Helen. When he did this, a war started and eventually Greece came up with the idea to create the Trojan Horse.
The Trojan war is actually not a set in stone event some still believe it to be a misremembering of past memories.
Though, whether or not it happened, that was the timely event that lead Greece into the Dark Ages.
There are no records of what things were like in Greece during the Dark Ages, but it was said to be a time where the large scale trades ended and poverty spread and increased drastically.
In the estimated time of 800 BCE, written records reappeared and it was discovered that city-states started forming.
Greek life started to get based upon the city-states which were regularly run by military rulers and/ or aristocrats.
Eventually, people decided upon the idea of having a government called a Democracy where people govern themselves. That was the first form of Democracy.
After the Dark Age came the Golden Age, during the Golden Age Athens became the big city.
Athens was first ruled by a king, then a leader.
The leader helped Athens by freeing people in slavery. He also removed debt.
During the Golden Age, Athens became a rich city in silver and their trading profit went very high.
Greek religion is a very important part of the Greeks lives because they’re gods and goddesses represent different aspects of their life.
The Greek religion was made up of a family known as the Olympians because they lived on what was known as Mt.Olympus.
The Greek gods and goddesses acted as different states of human life including war, love, and physical things like the sea, or the weather.
The Greek philosophy is another aspect that greatly affected greek culture and lifestyle.
People like Socrates and Aristotle are Greek philosophers that are known still to this day as very famous people.
People like Socrates taught of how asking question can help people learn things.
As for people like Socrates they taught of how people’s behavior could correspond to their level of happiness.
