1. 1) Suppurative/ Purulent

   • Neutrophils dominate (dead and alive)
   • Dead host cells
   • Often bacterial in origin
   • May become walled off by granulation or fibrous tissue
     • Abscess
       • Localized area of Liquefactive necrosis
   • Empyema
     • Accumulation of pus in a body cavity
       • (Particularly within the pleural cavity)
         • Pyothorax

2. 2) Fibrinous

   • Forms as a result of increased vascular permeability
     • (fibrinogen escapes)
       • Thrombin (acts on fibrinogen)
       • fibrin
   • Yellow, soft coagulum (on top of tissues)
   • Thin Eosinophilic meshwork
   • Acute (Vs. Fibrosis (chronic))

3. 3) Serous

   • Fluid + albumen + plasma proteins (protein rich, low cells)
   • Early event
   • E.g. Blisters, serous arthritis, peritonitis

4. 4) Mucous/ Catharral

   • When mucous hypersecretion accompanies inflammation
   • Often in respiratory and GI tracts (where mucous secreting cells prominent)
   • Ex. Nasal discharge
