Ways to classify sports injuries
1. Direct and Indirect

  2. Indirect = intrinsic force (torn ligament - sprinting)
2. Soft and Hard Tissue
  1. Soft = everything but bone and teeth
  2. Hard = bone and teeth
3. Overuse
  1. Overuse of a specific body region
  2. running on hard surfaces (shin splints)
Soft Tissue Injuries
1. Tears,sprains and contusions
  1. tears = tissue stretched or severed
  2. sprains = streching or tearing a ligament
  3. strains = muscle or tendon is streched
2. Skin abrasions, lacerations, blisters
  1. abrasions = scraped skin on hard surface
  2. laceration = irregular tear of flesh
  3. blisters = collection of fluid under skin
3. Inflammatory response
  1. phase 1 = inflammatory stage
  2. phase 2 = repair stage
  3. phase 3 = remodeling stage
Hard tissue injuries
1. Fractures
  1. Chip or crack in bone
2. Dislocation
  1. Displacement of bone at a joint
