Interference theory

Jameela Princess English 5 cards

Cards in this deck (5)

  1. 1Proactive interferenceOld memory interferes with a new one. For example, your teacher cannot remember the names of the current class because of names from her previous classes interfering with this.
  2. 2Retroactive interferenceNew memory interferes with old ones. For example, your friend cannot remember the names of her classmates from last year because she has memorised the names of her new classmates.
  3. 3Effects of similarityMcGeoch and McDonald found that two similar pieces of information are more likely to interfere with each other.
  4. 4McGeoch and McDonald study into interference.Gave participants a list of words to memorise, until they could recall the list with 100% accuracy.
They then learned a new list. There were six groups of participants who had to learn different types of lists including a list of words similar to the original, nonsense syllables, words which had opposite meanings to the original list etc.
The participants then recalled the original list of words. This depended on the nature of the second list, most similar material produced the worst recall.
  5. 5AO3- Evidence from lab studies such as McGeoch and McDonald.
    - Artificial material used in the lab studies such as memorising random lists of words. This may cause interference to be much more likely, which means interference may not be a valid explanation for forgetting in real life.
    - Real life study: Baddeley and Hitch on rugby players.
    - Time between learning
    - Individual differences in interference
