Flashcards
Introduction to Memory
Cards in this deck (17)
- 1What is memory? Are the processes used to acquire, store, retain and later retrieve information.
- 2What are the different stages of learning and memory?Encoding, storage and retrieval
- 3What two types of effects did Murdock find in his free recall paradigm study?Primacy effect (remembered more words at the start of the list) and the recency effect (remembered more words at the end of the list).
- 4What did Postman and Phillips find in there free recall paradigm when there was no retention interval? They found that when there was no retention interval that the recency effect would be eliminated.
- 5What is the 'chunking hypothesis'?This is when pieces of information that are similar are put together into chunks for easy retrieval of memory.
- 6What does the multi-store memory model suggest?Suggests that once the sensory input is heard sensory registers pick this up and cognitive processes evaluate the stimuli. This then either goes to the short term or long term behaviour and then a response is given.
- 7What are the sensory registers?Keeps a trace of sensations and their information until it goes to the short-term memory.
- 8What are the control processes?Controls how much information goes into the short-term memory
- 9What are the 3 different levels of p of processing information?Shallow, intermediate and deep
- 10What is suggested in the working memory model?Asked participants to remember a list of numbers and then complete a task, if the list of numbers were remembered then it should have impaired the task. However, they found a lower amount of impairment.
- 11What two predictions are made by the working memory model? If the two tasks use the same components there will be impairments on one, if the two tasks use different components there should be no impairments.
- 12What is the phonological loop?dedicated to speech based information, output is speech
- 13What is the visuospatial sketchpad?Deals with visual information and where you are in relation to other objects.
- 14What is the Central Executive?Looks at attention, domain-general and sorts the information that gets between the slave systems.
- 15What is the episodic buffer?Replaced central executive; which coordinated the two systems.
- 16What is the decay theory of forgetting?Decay is due to memory traces fading.
- 17What is the interference theory of forgetting?Forgetting is due to interferences due to neural events.
