Blakemoore & Cooper

Cards in this deck (10)

  1. 1Blakemoore & Cooper AREA?Biological area - brain plasticity.Blakemoore & Cooper AREA?
  2. 2Blakemoore & Cooper AIM?To investigate physiological + behavioural effects of a limited visual experience in kittens, and whether brain development/plasticity occurs due to nurture rather than nature.Blakemoore & Cooper AIM?
  3. 3Blakemoore & Cooper RESEARCH METHOD?Lab experiment.Blakemoore & Cooper RESEARCH METHOD?
  4. 4Blakemoore & Cooper RESEARCH DESIGN?Independent measures design.Blakemoore & Cooper RESEARCH DESIGN?
  5. 5Blakemoore & Cooper IV?Whether kittens raised in a horizontal or vertical environment.Blakemoore & Cooper IV?
  6. 6Blakemoore & Cooper DV?Whether kittens in horizontal condition could detect vertically aligned objects (and vice-versa).Blakemoore & Cooper DV?
  7. 7Blakemoore & Cooper SAMPLE?- Kittens.
    - Studied from birth.
    - Randomly assigned to conditions.
    - 1 kitten from each kitten used to test neurophysical effects.
    Blakemoore & Cooper SAMPLE?
  8. 8Blakemoore & Cooper PROCEDURE?- New born kittens placed in dark room.
    - 2 weeks, randomly placed in condition for 5 hours.
    - Glass platform inside tall cylinder w/ horizontal/vertical black-and-white lines.
    - Visual field restricted to 130 degrees w/ wide black collar - prevents seeing own body.
    - 5 months, ended + kittens placed then placed for several hours a week in a lit furnished room.
    - DV then measured - whether kittens could detect objects in opposite alignment to what they were exposed to - visual reactions observed
    - 7 1/2 months, 1 kitten from each had their neurophysiology examined.
    Blakemoore & Cooper PROCEDURE?
  9. 9Blakemoore & Cooper RESULTS?- All extremely visually impaired - showed no visual placing (table) + no startle response (thrusted object)
    - Pupillary reflexes normal
    - All showed behavioural blindness (no detection of objects of opposite alignment to previous environment)
    - Recovery of some deficiencies - after 10 hours showed visual placing + some startle response (easily jump from chair to floor).
    - Some permanent damage - e.g. trying to touch objects beyond reach.
    - Neurophysical examination - horizontal/vertical plane recognition cells not triggered in kittens - unable to perform orientation selectivity so suffered from physical blindness.
    - Distributions of preferred orientation were abnormal.
    Blakemoore & Cooper RESULTS?
  10. 10Blakemoore & Cooper CONCLUSIONS?- Brain development affected by early experiences + environment rather than just genetics.
    - Clear evidence of brain plasticity so visual experiences have serious perceptual consequences.
    - Environment can determine perception at both behavioural + physiological levels (in kittens)
    Blakemoore & Cooper CONCLUSIONS?
