Memory

  1. RAM (Random-Access Memory)

    • When a program is loaded from a hard disk the data and instructions are stored here
    • Generally has less space but is faster than the hard disk
    • When power is lost all information in RAM is lost (it is volatile)
  2. ROM (Read-Only Memory)

    • Cannot be edited or deleted
    • Stores information that will not need to be changed
    • Stores bootstrapping instructions (the initial steps for turning on)
  3. Cache Memory

    • Stores copies of information from RAM that is used very frequently
    • Very quick memory
    • Very close to the CPU
  4. Flash Memory

    • Uses electronic chips for storage
    • Non-volatile (information is not lost when there is no power)
    • Typically used with flash drives to transport information from one computer to another
