Different Rocks

  1. Magma = Molten rock under the ground.

  2. Igneous rock forms when molten magma or lava cools and becomes solid.

    • Igneous rock that has solidified underground has large crystals. Granite is an example/
    • Igneous rock that has solidified on the surface of the Earth has small crystals. Basalt is an example.
  3. Lava = Magma that has reach the Earth's surface.

  4. Sedimentary rock forms when tiny particles (sediment) settle on the ocean floor. Over a long time, more and more layers of sediment settle on top. The pressure causes the layer to harden.

    • Chalk and limestone are examples of sedimentary rock. They are made from the shells of tiny sea creature that fell to the bottom of the ocean.
  5. Metamorphic rock is formed from sedimentary rock that has come under heat and pressure underground. This makes the arrangement of the crystals in the rock change.

    • Limestone and chalk change to marble when they come under heat and pressure.
