Memory
Baddeley 1966
- Coding is the process of converting the information In our memory system to another form so that in can be saved into our memory
- Baddeley gave four groups a list to learn
- Group one - Acoustically similar words
- Group two - Acoustically dissimilar words
- Group three - Semantically similar words
- Group four - Semantically dissimilar words
- Recalled list of words straight after hearing them (STM recall). Participants were worse when recalling acoustically similar words, however, after 20 minutes recall was worse when recalling semantically similar words. It is suggested by Baddeley that LTM is coded semantically.
- A - Artificial stimuli, no personal meaning. Semantic coding can be used for STM if it has some personal meaning
- V - Baddeley may not have tested LTM properly. 20 minutes may not be long enough to be considered LTM. STM may not
