Map content

Freud evaluation

  1. Strengths

    • Novel approach to explaining mental disorders
    • Methods were unique and developed specifically for his own purpose, to which they were all suited
    • Freud tried to be scientific in his work
    • Not all dreams held symbols, so he only used dream analysis as part of a complete psychoanalysis
  2. Weaknesses

    • Lack of evidence - Freuds methods required subjective interpretation
    • Freuds concepts are not measurable
    • Cannot repeat the study and therefore cannot be tested for reliability, as id ego and superego cannot be measured
    • Use of case studies means cases cannot be repeated
    • Small samples used in case studies
