Graphing Basics:

Ordered Pairs: ( x, y ) a point on the coordinate plane. A sort of solution set but there are many different ordered pairs that can solve an equation.

asymptote: the space between the axis and a line that gets really close to the axis but never actually touches it

Cartesian Plane: coordinate plane named after Rene Descartes (French Mathematician)

Unit 2

Independent variables: the other relies on

on x axis

usually x

Dependent variable: relies on the other

on y axis

usually y

To find these in real world problems try saying it out lout. "____ depends on ____. Or _____ depends on _______." and chose which fits best

_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Domain: the set of values of the independent variable

D: {5 < x < 20}

Range: the set of values of the independent variable

R: {6 < y ≤ 9}

Unit 2

To show ≤ and ≥ color in or don't color in the points. When the circle is empty it DOESN'T include that number. If it is filled in, or the line goes through that point, then it is included.

Page 3

There are other form of showing domain and range. Just chose which is easiest. One form is called Interval Notation. It is explained in the flow chart below:

Interval Notation

Functions VS Relations:

Functions: Every input has ONE output

Relations don't have to follow that rule, relations are a set of ordered pairs

ex: y^2=x
