Essay Paragraph Structure

Introduction

How can you blame appeasement for causing the war?

The appeasement policy adopted by the allies is often blamed by many historians for causing WWII because it allowed aggressive Nazi Germany to easy expand their boarder and increase their military, economical and industrial strength without exausting its resources. J.P.Taylor believed that it was not the policy of appeasment that caused the war but the allied leaders application of the policy that led to its ultimate faliure.

Define Appeasement

Appeasement in a political context, is a diplomatic policy of making political or material concessions to a (potential) enemy power (or powers) in order to avoid a threatened conflict.

Why was Appeasement chosen to help solve the conflict?

Appeasment was chosen by the other powers of Europe because of the lack of political power that was possesed by the government officals, and the sympathetic views that Germany had been treated too harshly by the treaty of Versailles.

Example

Sudetenland

An example of the Allied policy of appeasment was the handing over of the sudetanland to Hitler in March 1938. Hitler and his government's foreign expansion policy used two main concepts to dictate Germany's expansion. Lebensraum meaning living space and Gross Deutchland or greater Germany. Hitler water to unite all german speaking people into a greater Germany and so requested that the Sudetenlands (containing a german speaking minority) in Czechoslovakia re-unite with Germany. Under the policy of appeasement Hitler was given the land as some natoins in Europe though that Germany was treated too harshly by the Treaty of Versailles. Due to this people believed that Hitler's expansion was only a desperate attempt to reclaim what Germany was robbed off in the Treaty of Versailles.

Munich Conference

In September 1938 Hitler began talking of invading Czechoslovkia and if resisted would begin another war. Britain and France decided to hold a conferince in Munich with Germany to discuss giving Hitler Czecholsovakia as per the policies of appeasement. Due to the policy of appeasement the Czechoslovakian government was not invited to the diplomatic conference that would decide their nations fate. This failed as Hitler began wanting more territory, becoming more agressive with each nation he controlled. The Allies began to notice a pattern and realised that appeasement had failed them. They predicted that Poland would be Hitler's next objective to further his foreign expansion policy for Lebensraum (living space). Hitler invaded Poland and WWII had begun in full earnest.

Overall/Summary

How can appeasment be blamed for causing WWII.

Allied appeasement policies can be blamed for startin WWII because of its flaws when dealing with a determined and agrassive enemy in Germany (Hitler). Hitler's aggressive foreign expansion policy was focused on creating a greater Germany with more living room for all German people untied. Due to the nature of the situation faced by the allied nations, this strategy would inevitable lead to a World War.
