  1. lecture 1

    • The goal of a host:
    • use diverse strategies to keep the host safe from infectious organisms.
    • To have a host hurt you:
    • penetrate: get inside
    • adhere: stick and adhere
    • thrive: find the right nutrients and conditions from growth. minimum of these three must happen to cause infection.
    • Where are they going to attack to get inside? Ways of microbial entry.
    • skin
    • lungs
    • GI tract
    • oral/gut
    • The defenses from the host are either
    • innate
    • adaptive
  2. Innate Immunity

    • What you are born with, just waiting to protect you.
    • Physical barriers: Most important barriers during infection. Skin- 99.99% defensive, lactic acid production. Mucous membranes- prevent from entry, getting into tissues. Fluids- mucous. Prevents pathogen adhesion on membranes.
    • physiological barriers:
    • inflammation
  3. Bug Attacks

    • These bugs will produce their own digestive enzymes. which will digest certain collagen etc.
    • Adhesions, specialized molecules that will find and bind.
    • Motility, swim, move to propel through mucous and fluids, barriers.
    • colonization: colonize the host. It will land, stick and grow. Replication will take place; become genetically identical from original. Creates a colony, mutations are rare.
    • Virulence Factors: Helps for survival. Made to do damage to the host.
