Cards in this deck (9)
- 1A01: Birth order-galton found that first born sons would have had financial resources to carry on education
-first borns also had more responsibility so they were treated as companions
-also get more attention and better resources from family - 2A02: belmont and marolla-looked at 19 year old dutch men between 1944-1947 (386,114 men)
-found that 1st borns were more intelligent
-a third born in a family of 4 performed better than in a family of 5
-smaller families more intelligent because can share resources better - 3A01: the resource dilution model blake 1981The Resource Dilution Model proposed by Blake has 3 core assumptions;
-parental resources are finite
-additional siblings reduce the share of parental resources received by any one child
-parental resources have an important effect on children’s educational success.
-All three of these assumptions have had support to suggest that they are true, as it is a well-known fact that there are limits with resources that an individual can provide to another. - 4A02: schachter-found an overrepresentation of first born children in colleges, which suggests that they were the ones encouraged to further their education because they were the first to have the opportunities within their families and would have the financial support to see them through a degree
- 5A02: clark and rise-found there to be an overrepresentation of first born children among Nobel Prize winners, for the same reason. This suggests that those born first are at an advantage because they will have the resources to aid them throughout life, a luxury which cannot be given to younger siblings
- 6A01: attachment skeels and dyeSkeels and Dye (1939) compared the development of two groups of orphans. One group was raised in a normal institution, in which the staff were too busy to take an invested interest in the children; and the other group were raised in a home for mentally retarded women, the women in this home gave the orphans attention and became surrogate mothers during their time there. Skeels and Dye found that after 18 months, the average IQ score of the children cared for in the normal institution fell from 87 points to 61 points, however, those raised in the home for mentally retarded women had an average increase of IQ score from 64 points to 92 points.
- 7A02: czech twinsOn discovery at the age of seven the Koluchová twins were dwarfed in stature, lacking speech, suffering from rickets and did not understand the meaning of pictures. The doctors who examined them confidently predicted permanent physical and mental handicap.
-they later grew up to be higher than average in terms of intelligence and were married - 8A01: culture-intelligence is hard to generalise. in a westernised culture, high intelligence is the ability to do well in exams
-in Africa, it is practical intelligence, like hunting - 9—
