Memory

Cards in this deck (11)

  1. 1What did Conrad find about encoding in the STM?Encoding in the STM is acoustic. He found mistakes made tended to be as a result of mixing up the sounds rather than the appearance of the letters.
  2. 2What did Miller find about the capacity of the STM?He found participants could recall between 5-9 numbers. 7 +/- 2 items.
  3. 3What did Peterson and Peterson find about the duration of the STM?They found the duration was about 18-20 seconds.
  4. 4What did Baddeley find about the encoding in the LTM?The encoding type is semantic, which is the meaning of the word.
  5. 5What is the duration/capacity of the LTM?Duration = forever
    Capacity = unlimited
  6. 6What are the stages of memory?Input--->encoding--->storage--->retrieval-->output
  7. 7What is the Multi-Store Model of memory?What is the Multi-Store Model of memory?
  8. 82 strengths of the MSM...The distinction between the STM and LTM has been supported by evidence in the form of both case studies (HM and KF) and experiments + it has been very influential.
  9. 92 weaknesses of the MSM...The model is oversimplified, it suggests both STM/LTM operate singular; this not the case + it says rehearsal transfer info into LTM but this in't essential, how can we recall info which isn't rehearsed (swimming) yet can't recall info we have rehearsed (reading your notes while revising)
  10. 10What is the Serial Position Effect? Does it support the MSM?Recency effect = idea that people recall last words
    Primacy effect = idea that people recall first words
    They forget the middle, supporting 2 different storages (STM/LTM)
    It supports MSM
  11. 11Who was HM? What did the case study find?
