About Film Genres (including Horror)

GoConqr Original

What this unit covers

This unit is about how films are sorted into genres and how each genre works. Horror gets the most attention, but you will also find maps on thrillers, westerns, gangster films, action adventure, comedy and teen films. Nearly all of the material is in mind map form, with a small set of flashcards.

Where to start

Begin with Types of Genres. It lists the main genres side by side, so you can see the whole field before narrowing down. Then move to Basics of Horror, which breaks the genre into its repertoire of elements: expected character types, typical locations, set pieces and narrative events, and familiar iconography in mise-en-scène.

Going deeper into horror

Once you know the basics, these maps add detail:

  • Fear Factors: the themes of horror. covers loss of control, otherness, the unknown, body trauma, being hunted and the invasion of safe spaces.
  • Iconography of Horror and Horror Conventions help you check what audiences expect to see.
  • Psychological Horror and FM2: British Horror look at particular strands of the genre.
  • The flashcard deck British horror - Wickerman gives quick recall on one British horror title.

Other genres and theory

Thriller sub genres sorts thrillers into psychological, crime, disaster and action types, with example films. The western map looks at themes and conventions, including racism and sexism. The Teen Genre Essay map looks at stereotypes and how clothing acts as a short-cut to character. For theory, Genre Theories Underpinning my Film brings in Richard Dyer's idea that genre offers pleasurable escape, and the LOGAN map shows how a film can deviate from the usual themes of its genre.

Using the maps well

Read a map, then cover it and write down what you remember. Compare your list with the map and note the gaps. These resources mention A-level Film Studies, so they suit school students working on genre for that course, and teachers can use them as starting points for lessons. This unit sits in the Film Language and Analysis strand of Photography and film. Pick one map today and try to add an example film of your own to it.
