About pragmatics flashcards

What the pragmatics flashcards cover

The decks offer different routes through the unit. Pragmatics 101 asks about direct and indirect speech acts, illocution and maxims. Talk and Action covers implicatures and ways of responding to maxims. The Politeness deck focuses on Lakoff’s strategies and Leech’s maxims.

How to use the decks

Start with Pragmatics 101 if you want questions on several topics. For a more focused session, try Speech Acts, which includes locutionary, illocutionary and perlocutionary terms. Read each prompt, attempt an answer from memory, then check the card and return to terms you found difficult.

If you want to see ideas laid out together, switch to a mind map on the Pragmatics unit page. You can also try a quiz there after working through a deck. Choose a topic and explore its flashcards.
