PSYC 2530 - Chapter 10
Cards in this deck (29)
- 1Chapter 10: Basis of PsychoanalysisSigmund Freud:
- 2Free association:instructing the patient to say whatever comes to mind to cure them; known as the talking cure
- 3Psychic determinism:assumption that everything happens in a person's mind, therefore everything a person thinks or does has a specific cause; psychology can explain everything and nothing is accidental; leads to the importance of the unconscious
- 4a. therapeutic alliance b. transference c. countertransferencea. emotional bond with the therapist
b. tendency to bring ways of thinking, feeling, and behaviour that developed towards one person into a later relationship with a different person
c. the therapist has reactions to the patient - 5Dream analysis:unearth latent content from manifest content; problems have their roots in unconscious conflicts, and once they are brought into the consciousness, the rational part of ego is able to deal with it
- 6Internal Structure:the mind has an internal structure made of parts that can function independently and, in some cases, in conflict with each other
- 7Id:irrational and emotional; most primitive part of the brain; source of all drives and urges; present at birth and not altered by the passage of time; follows pleasure principle, amoral, immediate gratification
- 8Ego:rational; executive, uses defence mechanisms to manage anxiety; develops early, when infants differentiate themselves from the outside work; can delay gratification, conscious thought, rational and practical thinking
- 9Superego:morality:
conscience: what we shouldn't do - guilt
ego-ideal: what we should do
last to develop but still in early childhood; grows out of ego; unrealistic, not bounded by reality - 10Compromise formation:the ego finds a middle course between competing demands, motivation, morality, and practicality, and also among they many things a person wants at the same time
- 11Libido:also known as mental or psychic energy; only a fixed and finite amount is available at any given moment; discards the idea that unexpressed impulses build up over time; the goal is to free more psychic energy
- 12Life Drive:libido or sexual drive; has to do with the creation, protection, and enjoyment of life
- 13Death Drive:Thanatos; believed in the duality of nature; engaging in destructive behaviour
- 14Doctrine of opposites:everything implies, even requires, an opposite (basis for the death drive)
- 15What are the stages and character types associated with psychosexual development?Oral: being either overly dependent or overly independent
Anal: ordered vs chaotic behaviour
Phallic: over or under sexualized
Latency
Genital: sexuality in a mature adult where all is in balance - 16Fixation:if a stage isn't properly completed, libidinal energy must be left behind at that point and an adult will continue to struggle with those problems
- 17Regressiontendency to retreat to fixated stage under stress
- 18Secondary process thinking:conscious part of the ego thinks this way; rational, practical, prudent, and can delay or redirect gratification
only develops as the ego begins to develop; less important role relative to primary thinking - 19Primary Process thinking:the way the unconscious mind operates; does not understand the idea of 'no'
Immediate gratification of every desire; can use displacement to replace one idea or image with another - 20Condensation:can compress several ideas into one
ex: image of a house might consolidate a complex set of memories - 21Symbolisation:one thing might stand in for another; Freud dropped the idea of universal symbols; they vary for each individual
Believed primary process thinking could become conscious during fever, delirium, and during dreams or psychosis - 22Freud's topographic model: the Conscious Mindpart of your mental functioning that you can observe when you turn your attention inward
- 23Preconsciousconsists of ideas you're not thinking of at the moment but can be brought to consciousness easily
- 24Unconsciousall of the Id and Superego and most of the Ego; the only way to bring it to the surface is by digging; clues can come from hypnosis, slips, accidents, and memory lapses, as well as during free association
- 25Parapraxis:another name for 'Freudian slips'; a leakage from the unconscious mind manifesting as a mistake; forgetting is an unconscious conflict revealing itself in your behaviour; to avoid thinking about something painful you fail to remember it, but it can slip out in other ways
- 26Briefly describe the 8 types of defence mechanisms:Denial: preventing perception of the source of anxiety
Repression: prevent recall of source of anxiety
Reaction formation: protect against a forbidden thought by instigating the opposite
Projection: attributing one's insecurities onto another
Rationalization: creating a seemingly logical reason for doing something shameful
Intellectualization: translating a threatening situation into cold terms
Displacement: redirect forbidden impulse onto safer target
Sublimation: convert base impulse into noble cause - 27Oedipal complex:boy sees father as a rival for mother's love
- 28Electra complex:girls have penis envy and blame mother for lack of penis
- 29Critique of psychoanalysis:Excessively complex
Case study method (based on introspection)
