SP302: Aggression

chantel Smith Psychology English 17 cards

Cards in this deck (17)

  1. 1How did Hobbes (1651) and Rousseau (1754) see aggression? Who is correct?Hobbes: We are innately aggressive but society curbs that.
Rousseau: we are gentle, but society makes us aggressive.
Hobbes is right: we are innately vicious.
  2. 2What does Pinker (2011) suggest about the future of our violence?Like Hobbes, we believe we are becoming less violent, curbing our natural tendencies to be more cooperative in society.
We not only reduce aggression but are increasing our empathy.
  3. 3Explain the biological theory of aggression in accordance to Freud and Lorenz.Freud--> Thanatos--> Death instinct we are born out of frustration.
Lorenz and Catharsis: displacement of aggression now, whereas before it was needed to keep a species alive.
  4. 4Is catharsis good?No- leads to embodied social cognition and you are more likely to script this way of letting out energy.
  5. 5Hokanson (1974) shows counter-evidence for catharsis being bad- explain.Symptoms of anger reduced when a person could retaliate against a wrongdoer- the act is justifies and leaves fairness.
  6. 6Genetic study: LagerspetzBred mice in isolation of ones that had more aggressive and less aggressive genes.
Led to two types of mice:
    Warrior mice with warrior gene
    Passie mice with passive gene
  7. 7Gene study: Belyaev (Foxes)Foxes selectively bred and domesticated.
Phenotype changed to depigmentation (seen with dogs), floppier ears and curlier tails. Less aggressive physically and behaviourally.
  8. 8How do the AP2 gene and MAO-A gene (Guo et al) link to aggression?AP2: indirect aggression/ social aggression when mutated.
MAO-A: reduction in serotonin levels, less mood control.
  9. 9Which neurotransmitters are linked to aggression? Explain with a study.Serotonin lower levels. If some are taken from the diet, more likely to be aggressive.
Testosterone: Higher in rewarding situations. Salvador found that when wins in basketball were attributed to the player, their levels of testosterone increased.
  10. 10How does alcohol affect aggression levels.Increased aggression
50% of rapes and 65% of violence cases linked to alcohol.
Placebo also has the same effect. (Beague)
  11. 11What are the neuroanatomical influences of aggression?Delgado: induced stimulation on hippocampus on monkeys= more aggressive
Raine: PET scans show reduced activity in the prefrontal cortex of murders--> PFC usually needed for social understanding.
  12. 12Twin studies: what do they tell us about aggression?Raine: 1/2 twins had criminal records (mono)
1/5 twins had criminal records (Dizy)
Tellegan: monozygotic more likely to be aggressive.
  13. 13How does self-esteem link to aggression?It doesn't overall.
Only will occur if a person percieves themselves to be superior
  14. 14How does narcissism lead to aggression?Hurts their sensitive self-esteem.
Will be directed at the person who threatened or if unable to, on innocent people.
  15. 15What is the frustration-aggression hypothesis? Dollard. When motivation is strong, we expected to get a goal and our pathway is blocked, we become frustrated.
Dollard says frustration always leads to aggression.
  16. 16Burnstein & Worschel (1962) - experimental study led to the revised frustration hypothesis- explain. Two conditions in problem-solving:
    1. Hearing aid malfunctioned
    2. The person wasn't paying attention
When we cannot control other people's actions, it leads to frustration and anger (but not necessarily aggression). If it leads to aggression, it becomes a script.
  17. 17How do sports lead to aggression?Correlation between drinking, the home team winning and aggression.
    Catharsis hypothesis (Lorenz).
Agressive sports reflect and enhance societal normas (Sipes)
Wearing black makes the players more aggressive (Frank & Gilovich)
Combat sport- more aggressive off field.
    (Traclet)
