Respiratory System

Kate Harper Human Bioscience English 20 cards

Cards in this deck (20)

  1. 1Respiratory systemGaseous Exchange
    Dependent on the cardiovascular system
  2. 2Respiratory StructureNasal cavity
    Nostril
    oral cavity
    Pharynx
    larynx
    Trachea
    Carina of trachea
    Right main bronchus
    right lung (3 lobes)
    Left main bronchus
    Left lung (2 lobes)
    Diaphragm
  3. 3Nasal Cavity FunctionsNasal Vestible- Coarse hairs for filtering
Conchae (folds) - increase the area and are lined with mucous membranes, for moistening, warming and spiralling of air
Citliated epithelium - trap dust and carry mucus back to throat
    Olfactory epithelium - smell
  4. 4SinusesFrontal sinus
    Sphenoid sinus
    Air filled cavities
    - produce mucus
    - lighten the skull
    - resonate sound
  5. 5The pharynx (throat)Nasopharynx - cotains pharyngeal tonsil. Pseudostratified ciitated epithelium
oropharynx - contains palatine and lingual tonsils.
Laryngopharynx - connects oesophagus with larynx
  6. 6Larynx (voice box)Connect pharynx to trachea
    Mostly hyaline cartilage
    Adams apple = thyroid cartilage
epiglottis - closes off the entrace to the airways during swallowing
Glottis - contains the vocal cords (sound is made when they vibrate)
  7. 7Trachea (windpipe)Anterior to the esophagus
'C' shaped cartilage holds the trachea open
Trachealis muscle contracts to force things out of the trachea (coughing)
Cillitated to push dust particle etc back up into the throat mucous.
  8. 8LungsFound in thoracic cavity
    Flank the mediastinum
    Right - 3 lobes
left - 2 lobes to allow for the position of the heart
  9. 9Lungs - the pleuralungs are covered by:
    Visceral pleura - inner
    Paretial pleura - outer
Pleural cavity - fluid filled to reduce friction when breathing
  10. 10Bronchi and bronchiolesConducting tubes - moving air into the lungs
    Contains 23 branches
  11. 11Bronchopulmonary segmentsEach lobe is divided into a number of bronchopulmonary segments
Each segment is served by a tertiary bronchus, and has its own blood supply
  12. 12CarinaSensitive mucous membrane which when stimulated triggers the couch reflex
  13. 13Bronchidivide into smaller and smaller bronchi until they become bronchioles
  14. 14BronchiolesNo cartilage, just smooth muscle that can regulate the flow of air to the alveoli
  15. 15Terminal bronchiolesThe end of the bronchiole tubes...entering the respiratory zone, where it reacts with the bloom stream
  16. 16Respiratory zoneGas exchange takes place between the alveolar and the capillary walls
These two form the respiratory membrane
  17. 17Respiratory membraneSurfactant - helps prevent the collapsing of alveoli
Macrophages - engulfs dust particles and microbes to ensure no unwanted matter gets exchanged
  18. 18Overview- Conducting zoneconsists of: nose, pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchi, bronchioles, terminal bronchioles
function: Warms, filters, moistens air which is carried to and from the respiratory portion
  19. 19Overview: Respiratory zoneConsists of: Respiratory bronchioles, alveolar ducts, alveolar sacs and the alveoli
    Function: where gas exchange occurs
  20. 20respiratory terminology
