Psychodynamic Approach
Cards in this deck (10)
- 1Psychodynamic approachOur behaviour is influenced by the unconscious mind, childhood experiences and early relationships.
- 2Structure of the personalityId: Irrational part of our personality. Based on the pleasure principle.
Superego: Moral part of our personality. Based on the morality principle.
Ego: Rational part of our personality. Based on the reality principle.
The three parts are in constant conflict throughout life. - 3Psychosexual stages of development ~Oral stage~Get pleasure from oral stimulation.
Receiving too much stimulation will result in the person becoming optimistic and gullible.
Receiving too little stimulation can result in the person becoming pessimistic and distrusting. - 4Psychosexual stages of development ~Anal stage~Gets pleasure from the anus.
Too lenient potty training results in an anally expulsive personality (messy).
Too strict potty training results in an anally retentive personality (obsessive and stingy). - 5Psychosexual stages of development ~Phallic stage~Boys develop Oedipus complex to get closer to their fathers and compete for their mother's love.

Denial: Refusing to accept some aspects of reality. - 9Psychodynamic approach ~Positive evaluation~-Application to psychoanalysis using dream analysis, slips of the tongue and free association to analyse thoughts and dreams.
-Little Hans showed evidence of being in the phallic stage as he experienced castration fear and fantasised about his mother. - 10Psychodynamic approach ~Negative approach~-Low generalisability as Freud's theory is based on case studies of single individuals.
-Unconscious mind is difficult to test scientifically so there is low validity as the explanation cannot be tested to see if it is true.
-Psychic determinism as free will is ignored due to the belief that all behaviour is driven by unconscious forces.
