Lecture 2: long term memory

Theresa Anyanwu Psychology English 20 cards

Cards in this deck (20)

  1. 1What are 4 examples of tests of memory?-Recall
    -Recognition
    -Priming
    -Lexical decision task
  2. 2What are examples of two perceptual tests?-Word identification
    -Degraded word naming
  3. 3What is a priming task?A task where you find related/unrelated/slightly related words
  4. 4What is a word fragment task?An implicit memory task
-participants look at a list of words
-then have complete them with letters taken out
    e.g. Dog
    D_g
  5. 5What is a lexical decision task?Participants have to decide if a word is real or not
  6. 6What is an artificial grammar task? (Reber 1967)-Participants shown letter strings + not told associated rules
-Participants then told rules and have to classify set of word strings
-The AGL rules are very complex
  7. 7What does Hirst et al. (1986)'s graph show about RECOGNITION and RECALL in amnesic patientsIt shows that there is a large difference between recognition and recall in amnesic patients- they can recognise a lot of what they can't recall
  8. 8What is Mendlers (1980) two process theory of recognition?recognition is a judgement based on 'retrieval' and 'familiarity'
  9. 9What is retrieval?A conscious recollection of previous events?
  10. 10What is familiarity?A priming-based experience based on fluency
  11. 11Why may recognition still be preserved in Amnesic patients?Because priming, alongside other implicit memory is preserved in amnesia
  12. 12What was Tulvina (1985)'s remember/ know paradigm?-participants were shows list of words/ pics
-participants later had to identify example words as remember/ know
  13. 13What is Gardiner + Parkin's (1990) dual process model?Remember/ know responses happen due to different memory retrieval processes
  14. 14What is the Single Process?Remember + know responses due to difference levels of confidence that an item has been recalled/ recognised
  15. 15What evidence did Dunn (2008) give for single process recognition?-A remember/ know method was used in an experiment
-The was stronger memory trace to recollection/ remember than familiarity/ know
  16. 16What did Adante et al. (2012) use to support the dual process model?ERP
  17. 17What are different ways we use to store information?-Schemas
    -Multi- store model
    -Semantic networks
  18. 18What is the hierarchical semantic network model? The way animals evolve downwards due to the extra things they can do
  19. 19What are the rules for the hierarchical semantic network model?1. Each step in the modal takes time
    2. The steps at the same level take the same amount of time to access
    3. To get to the next level takes longer than the level before
  20. 20What did Meyer and Schvaneveldt (1971) find about priming? When words are related (e.g. bread + butter) the reaction times to find out if the words are real or not is shorter
