Flashcards
Evolutionary Psychology Lecture 9 Notes
Cards in this deck (13)
- 1What are the 3 main systems and what do they control?1. Arousal System: Bodily State
2. Limbic System: Brain Activity
3. Neurotransmitters: Chemical Transmission - 2What does the Arousal System involve and help with?A state of physical and mental alertness.
Body and mind become charged with energy.
- Consciousness
- Attention
- Information Processing
- Motivation
- Emotion - 3What is the Yerkes-Dodson Law involve?Too much arousal, or too little arousal can impair performance, it’s all about balance.
- 4What is Affective Neuroscience?Definition: How brain structures and chemicals create emotional responses and how emotional information is processed.
- 5What are the differences between fMRI and EEG?EEG can be somewhat limited for emotion research, measures electrical activity from the surface of the brain (cortex). Useful for when it’s happening in the brain.
fMRI good for measuring subcortical activity – can ‘access’ deep brain structures involved in emotion in addition to cortical activity. Useful for where it’s happening in the brain. - 6What is the Limbic System?Collection of brain structures that help us experience emotion:
- Thalamus
- Hippocampus
- Amygdala
All of these connect to Cortex. - 7What are the 6 main emotional 'systems' within the the brain?- Reward (desire)
- Liking (pleasure and enjoyment)
- Anger
- Fear
- Love (care and attachment)
- Grief (loneliness and despair) - 8Explain the Reward System.ORDER: Hypothalamus, Amygdala, Nucleus Accumbens, Frontal Cortex
KEY INFORMATION: Dopamine circuit, causes excitement, anticipation and meaningfulness.
EXTRA INFORMATION: very sensitive to drugs that have similar things (cocaine). - 9Explain the Liking System.ORDER: Nucleus Accumbens, Orbitofrontal Cortex (OFC)
KEY INFORMATION: Different from reward, different from ‘wanting’ something (e.g. drug abuse).
EXTRA INFORMATION: Sensitive to opioids, and endocannabinoids. Distinction between desire and enjoyment contributes to addiction. - 10Explain the Anger / Rage System.ORDER: Amygdala, Hypothalamus, Left Frontal Cortex
KEY INFORMATION: Separate to fear network, but close by.
EXTRA INFORMATION: Approach and attack emotion. Linked to appetitive circuits so lack of reward can provoke rage. - 11Explain the Fear System.ORDER: Amygdala
‘Regular’ processing: Eye to thalamus to visual cortex to amygdala = slow but accurate, detailed processing.
‘Short-cut’ processing: Eye to thalamus straight to amygdala = can react subconsciously (fast but less accurate). - 12What are the uses of the Amygdala?- Memory and Attention (Episodic-autobiographical)
- Emotional Alarm System (Perception and response to threat)
- Connects to facial muscles
- Greater amygdala activity during an emotional event enhances later memory.
- Social Processing
- Threat / Fear (Rapid, without awareness) - 13What is Social Processing?Lesions of the amygdala impair recognition of fear in faces.
Bilateral amygdala damage led to an inability to spontaneously fixate eye region; impairs fear recognition.
