Factors affecting EWT

Bethany Barnes Psychology A level English 11 cards

Cards in this deck (11)

  1. 1What are the two factors that affect Eye Witness Testimony?Anxiety
    Misleading Information
  2. 2How does Anxiety affect recall? The Yerkes-Dodson hypothesis states that anxiety increases recall up until a certain point but too much can affect memory
  3. 3What effect did Loftus and Palmer suggest had an affect on EWT?The weapons focus effect - that eyewitnesses are unable to register other details if a weapon is involved
  4. 4Evaluate Anxiety as a factor affecting EWT.Strength - Loftus et al. (1987)
Weakness - research from Yuille and Cutshall found the weapon-focus effect did not apply in real life
    - research from Pickel suggested that it was the strangeness of the weapon, not the anxiety that led to the weapon-focus effect
  5. 5What are the two main elements of Misleading information?Post-event discussion
    Leading questions
  6. 6How do leading questions affect EWT?Questions worded in a certain way can activate a witness' schema and influence them to give the desired answer
  7. 7Outline the aim and procedure of Loftus and Palmer's study (1971) on misleading questions.Aim - to investigate how the participants' estimate of a car's speed could be influenced by misleading questions
Procedure - showed participants a film of a car crash and asked how fast the car was going when it _____ the other car, with 5 conditions: smashed, hit, bumped, collided, contacted
  8. 8What did Loftus and Palmer (1974) find and conclude? They found that contacted gave the lowest estimate and smashed the highest estimate.
They concluded that people's memory could be altered by the question asked.
  9. 9Evaluate Loftus and Palmer's study (1974).Weakness - may be due to demand characteristics
Strength - Lab experiment with high internal validity
  10. 10What is Post-event discussion>Misleading information being added to a memory after a discussion about the event has occurred.
  11. 11Evaluate Misleading information as a factor affecting EWT.Weakness - Not as applicable to important facts
    - Research criticism from Yuille and Cutshall
