Britain 1950's
Cards in this deck (9)
- 1Start of progression and change for womenCauses: at start of 1950's Men were the "breadwinners of the family" whilst the women were expected to stay at home and look after kids, whilst kids were expected to be respectful.
Effects: Divorce was difficult to acheive for women, women who could not find work had no hope.
Results: This led to strikes in factories and political movements for women - 2Tripartite education system1944 Education Act introduced the Tripartite education system. At the age of 11, students would take the 11 plus exams, this decided what school best fit you out of:
Secondary Technical schools = specialised in enginerring based education.
Secondary Modern schools = general all round education, 70% of students went here in 1950's pupils left at 15, half mixed sex.
Grammar schools = Highly academic lessons, like latin and classics. 20 % attended in 1950 most stayed till 16 for O-Levels, many to A-Levels and then Uni.
This meant that those who did not "pass" the 11 plus were condemmed to lesser education due to less funding. - 3Reasons for lack of oppurtunity for leasure activity (2 details)Time - men worked on average 40 minutes longer per day and had 2 weeks less holiday per year in the 1950's than 1979; however it had improved as the 1948 Act of parliment doubled paid holiday to two weeks. Due to lack of machinary, women spent on average 30 minutes extra a day doing housework.
Disposable income - in 1953, the average mans income meant that after 15 hours of work they would be able to afford their food for the week, this is much more than the 9 hours in 1981. - 42 details about holidays in the 1950'sless than 2% of people went on holiday abroad, the majority going to the seaside or the coast, an example of this is "wakes week" where many towns would close down and the whole populance would go to the seaside.
Holiday camps were new, like Butlins, these were affordable and allowed for poorer families to go on holiday. - 5The causes, effects and results of living and working conditions.Living and working conditions were improving:
Causes: The post-WW2 economic boom and the new welfare state meant that more people had more money.
Effects: This meant that absolute poverty was a thing of the past, and Britain had full employment.
Results: People enjoyed more disposable income, and had a better state of housing, slum clearing and house building became a regular occurance, and most people were able to live in a house and provide for there family. However, this increase in wages meant an increase in inflation... - 6Reasons for social change for women, and arguments against it...Many women were bored with housework at home, furthermore, during WW2, women were given factory jobs, which alot of women enjoyed and post WW2 were reluctant to give up.
Many men had traditional views of women in the 1950's, and believed it was there resposibility and duty to look after the house whilst the men worked. - 7Obstacles for womens rights (7 details)School - most working-class women left school at 15 with no qualifications. Those who carried on were condemmed to secretarial skills, childcare or hairdressing; 1 in 4 women at work in the late 1950's were secretaries.
University - few women went to uni, very few women went on to study the sciences; 5% of lawyers and 15% of doctors were women.
Marriage - many women were still teenagers when they got married, this meant they were 'condemmed' to a life of serving there husbands from a young age.
Babies - most women gave birth within the first 3 years of marriage, 2/3 of all babies were to women under the age of 25, women with young children working was unacceptable, and employers were unwilling to re-hire them later when the children were older.
Magazines - reinforced gender stereotypes, e.g: 'Woman and Home".
Jobs - white collar work was in low demand, and machinary work dominated the employment, these were tradittionaly male jobs.
Law - there were no laws enforcing equal pay! - 8Windrush Causes effects and results. The Windrush was a ship in the 1950's that transported immigrants from the carribean.
Causes: After WW2 many buildings and roads were destroyed throughout Britain, Britain did not have the man power to support these fixes that needed to be made, so they looked to immigration for cheap labour to fix Britain. Furthermore, the 1948 British Nationality Act meant all people living in commonwealth countries British ciizens.
Effects: The SS windrush delivered black immigrants from the Carribean to the UK, representatives were sent to the Carribean to recruit these cheap labourers, this meant a huge rise in immigrants in the 1950's.
Results: This led to increase tension within Britain between the white and the blacks because the white males, more the young ones, saw this as the immigrants taking there jobs and there women, this angered many of the British. - 9Notting Hill Race Riots, 1958, Causes effects and results.Causes: Life for immigrants was much different from the life the immigrants had expected, this was because, some trade unions complained about immigrants taking jobs, some young men sought to intimmidate blacks (teddy boys), many politicians thought that many came for the welfare and not to help the British, and many places held up signs saying no blacks or no cloured, segregating the population.
Effects: In nottinghill, 1958, white and black youths fought each other on the streats, this resulted in 1000 stabbings, and led to the Notting Hill riots throughout the country. White men would take to the streets with petrol bombs, knives, chains and iron bars, killing black men shounting 'nigga out'.
Results: As there was wide spread news coverage of this, most of the british public were shocked by what was happening, more than 4000 immigrants returned to the Carribean. This sparked political backlash from Carribean goverments, a divide was created between the 2 opinions, e.g: times 'the ugleist fighting' Daily Mail 'should we let them carry on coming in?'
