Flashcards
Variables & types of data
Cards in this deck (7)
- 1Independent variable (IV)- It's value is fixed/controlled
- It has a hypothesised cause (we think it will have an effect on another variable)
- Manipulated in experiments - 2Levels of IV- Usually categories
- E.g. IV = religion. Levels = Christianity, Islam, no religion
- Levels are usually the conditions/groups used in a study - 3Dependent variable (DV)- It's value depends on something else in the study (hopefully IV)
- It has a hypothesised effect
- DV is always measured - 4Nominal data- Usually consists of categories/groups
- Does not have numeric value
-Most statistical tests do not apply - 5Ordinal data- "Order of performance"
- Distance between values is not taken into consideration
- E.g. coming 1st, 2nd, 3rd in a race - finishing times can have unequal intervals - 6Interval data- Equal intervals between each point on the scale
- Numbers can be positive or negative
- E.g. temperature in Celcius - 7Ratio data- Equal intervals between each point on the scale
- Has a meaningful absolute zero
- E.g. weight/height. Cannot go below zero
