  4. 4Which of the following is an accurate statement about sample size? Select one: a) Sample size is a constant percentage of the population size. b) A smaller sample size increases confidence that the sample reflects the population . c) There are no good reasons for collecting a small sample. d) A larger sample size increases our certainty that the results of a survey will accurately reflect the population.d) A larger sample size increases our certainty that the results of a survey will accurately reflect the population.
  5. 5The following item was included in a survey designed to measure general mood levels: "I often feel happy and excited" Which element of the BRUSO model does this item violate? Select one: a) The item is not brief b) The item is ambiguous c) The item is not relevant d) The item is not specificd) The item is not specific
  6. 6Which of the following is the best measure of central tendency when a distribution is highly skewed? Select one: a) Mean b) Median c) Mode d) All of the above will be good measures of central tendency in this context.b) Median
  7. 7The mean of a distribution is: Select one: a) The most frequent score in a distribution b) The minimum value of a distribution c) The middle score of a distribution d) The average score of a distributiond) The average score of a distribution
  8. 8Closed-ended questions. . . Select one: a) give a fixed number of response to choose from. b) are easy to analyse. c) may be too limiting for respondents. d) All of thesed) All of these
  9. 9Lauren is conducting a survey to estimate what proportion of New Zealanders preferred working from home during the level-4 lockdown. She shares a link to her survey with friends on Facebook, and she asks those friends to share the link with anyone they know, too. Which of the following statements best describes the method of sampling in this study? Select one: a) There will be sampling bias. b) Lauren has used random sampling. c) This is an example of cluster sampling. d) Lauren's sampling frame consists of all Facebook users.a) There will be sampling bias.
  10. 10Michael conducts a survey asking about peoples' behaviours and attitudes about eating meat. The first question of his survey is: "How many times do you eat meat in a typical week?" The second question of his survey asks, "On a scale of 1 (disgusting) to 10 (delicious), how much do you like eating steak ?" The final question of his survey is, "On a scale of 1 (disagree) to 5 (agree), how much do you agree with the statement: Animals should never be killed for human consumption." Which of the following problems will Michael's survey likely encounter? Select one: a)Item-order effects will affect peoples' responses. b) The questions are difficult to interpret. c) The rating scales for these questions are unclear. d) All of the abovea)Item-order effects will affect peoples' responses.
  11. 11BRUSOThe BRUSO model, questionnaire items should be brief, relevant, unambiguous, specific, and objective.
  12. 12Sampling biasSampling bias occurs when a sample is selected in such a way that it is not representative of the population and therefore produces inaccurate results. The most pervasive form of sampling bias is non-response bias, which occurs when people who do not respond to the survey differ in important ways from people who do respond. The best way to minimize non-response bias is to maximize the response rate by prenotifying respondents, sending them reminders, constructing questionnaires that are short and easy to complete, and offering incentives.
  13. 13Context effectsUnintended influences on respondents’ answers
  14. 14Item-order effectWhen the order in which the items are presented affects people’s responses. One item can change how participants interpret a later item or change the information that they retrieve to respond to later items.
  15. 15Rating scaleFor quantitative variables, a rating scale is typically provided. A rating scale is an ordered set of responses that participants must choose from. The number of response options on a typical rating scale ranges from three to 11—although five and seven are probably most common.
