About Surveys and Questionnaires

GoConqr Original

What this page covers

The resources here follow a survey from first idea to finished data. Some focus on writing questions. Others deal with choosing a sample, picking a way to reach people, and checking the quality of what comes back. Almost all of the material is pitched at university level.

Where to start

Begin with the Questionnaire Design mind map. It lays out the steps of the design process, from deciding what information you want to choosing the form of response. Next, open the Quality control mind map, which covers piloting, translation, field testing and training interviewers, all ways of reducing measurement error.

Then move to flashcards for the vocabulary:

  • Using Survey Research covers what surveys measure and the main types of survey question, including open-ended, closed-ended and rating scales.
  • Chap 9 Survey Instrumentation goes into response formats, direct and indirect questions, and response sets.
  • Dooley 7: Survey Data Collection deals with cross-sectional, longitudinal, panel, trend and cohort surveys, and with contact methods such as telephone, mail and face-to-face.

Sampling and design

For sampling, the deck on questionnaires in Chapter 5 lists simple random, stratified, cluster, systematic and multistage sampling, along with nonprobability approaches. The deck Chapter 9: Questionnaire design adds validity, reliability and common design issues. Read these after the mind maps, so the terms already have a place to sit.

Using quizzes and maps together

Use a mind map to see how the parts connect, then take a quiz to find what has not stuck. Topic 9: The Nuts and Bolts of Survey Research starts with what survey research is and moves on to descriptive research questions. The quiz on Chapter 7 asks about the features of surveys and suitable survey topics. If a question trips you up, go back to the matching map or deck and read that branch again.

Where this unit sits

This unit belongs to the strand Data Collection and Analysis in the subject Research methods and academic skills. Teachers can use the maps and decks as ready-made starting points for a class.

Frequently asked questions

Which resource should I open first?

Start with the Questionnaire Design mind map. It sets out the steps in the design process, from specifying the information you need to choosing the form of response. After that, the Quality control mind map shows how piloting and field testing reduce measurement error. Flashcards and quizzes then help you check the details.

What do the mind maps on this page cover?

There are over 20 mind maps. They cover questionnaire design steps, quality control, response formats, biases in survey research, interview and mailed surveys, cover letters, open questions, data processing plans and survey structure. Some follow specific textbook chapters, so you can match them to your own reading.

Are the resources free to use?

Yes. Every resource listed here is free to open, study and take, with no account needed. A free account also saves your quiz scores and lets you make your own quizzes, mind maps, flashcards and notes, which is useful if you want to build a deck around your own course.

Who made these resources?

They were made by GoConqr users, not by GoConqr itself. More than 60 contributors have added material to this page. Because they are community-made, styles differ, and some decks follow particular course chapters. Compare a few on the same topic to get a fuller picture.

Which flashcards help with sampling?

The deck on Chapter 5, Sampling and Survey Research: Questionnaires, lists simple random, stratified, cluster, systematic and multistage sampling, plus nonprobability sampling. The Dooley 7 deck adds samples, census and survey types such as cross-sectional, panel, trend and cohort.

What if I can't find the exact topic I need?

Try a nearby resource first, such as a mind map on questionnaires or a deck on survey research definitions. Several decks and maps share similar titles but differ in detail. If nothing fits, you can build your own flashcards or mind map on the topic.
