Cards in this deck (9)

  1. 1At home Morris (2014)the naughty step can have long term emotional effects. children do not have the same ability as adults to reflect on their behaviour and verbalise the feelings they experience from things like the naughty step experience
  2. 2At home Consistencyparents may try to stay calm but the stressful life of a full time parent means parents may slip up and demonstrate frustration and inconsistency in their applications of conditioning techniques. these techniques are unlikely to be as effective in real life like experts promise.
  3. 3In schoolsome educational approaches believe that rewards and punishments advocated by conditioning techniques are harmful to a child's development and may interfer with a child's internal drive to learn.
  4. 4In school Lepper et al (1973)nursery children were asked to draw pictures. when children were promised a reward they spend half as much time drawing as children who were not promised a reward, suggesting motivation had been impacted by the expectation of extrinsic rewards
  5. 5In School Dweck (1975)children who were praised for doing well on a maths test did worse later on a more difficult test than the children who had been told they were lazy. the second group had learnt task persistence whereas the praised group gave up easily. rewards don't always lead to better performance.
  6. 6In school Lewis (1995)observed japenese elementary schools and found the use of reward systems was rarely used but the children were internally motivated
  7. 7Peers Bricker et al (2006)children as young as 10 would try smoking if peers smoked. this demonstrates that a child's need for positive reinforcement from their peer group is not always healthy.
  8. 8Vulnerable groups of childrenCritics of the Lovaas method believe that the technique had many problems. the treatment is mainly supported by Lovaas's (1987) reseach and this contained many methodological flaws including not randomly allocating children to be part of control or experimental group. this means conclusions drawn may not be entirely valid.
  9. 9Vulnerable groups of childrenLovaas indicates the treatment is intensive approx 40 hours a week. apart from being expensive, Anderson et al (1987) found that an average of 20 hours a week was enough to allow for significant improvement.
as conditioning techniques only treat symptoms, some believe the undesired behaviours may re-emerge once the reinforcement has been removed.
